Tiger Woulds
The 20-somethings are taking over the PGA Tour. Anthony Kim became the fifth in the past six weeks to win as he took the Wachovia Championship at Quail Hollow Club in a dominating five-stroke victory. Some of the other recent winners include Adam Scott, Trevor Immelman, Boo Weekly and Charlotte's Johnson Wagner. Kim is just 22 years old and became the youngest winner on tour in the past six years. Of course the guy just wins his first event and already the Tiger Woods comparisons have begun...now come on.
It's a beautiful thing to have this event tucked into South Charlotte. Watching Bubba Watson drive a tee shot is an awesome display of power. I also watched some of the world's greatest players like Vijay Singh and Mike Weir sink it into the drink on the par-3, 17th hole. I've played that hole twice in non-captain's choice rounds, and put up a two and a seven. I also managed to birdie the par-3, 13th hole once, so I always make it a point to watch that green for awhile so I can say I beat the pros. Of course, the litter of double and triple bogeys I've left around Quail Hollow currently escape my mind.
These pro golfers absolutely gush over the quality of this Wachovia Championship. They view the track itself as being of a "major" quality. Executive Director Kym Hougham says they try to meet every request that they physically can. A few examples include a private lounge and eating area for the caddies, monogramming the initials of a top golfer’s children on hotel pillows and towels, and chartering a jet for an outing to the Biltmore Estate in Asheville for players’ wives.
Attention Ohio State fans. There are still a few openings for foursomes this Friday, May 9th in the annual scholarship golf tournament at Olde Sycamore. For more details, go to charlottebuckeyes.com. I played last year with Panthers wide receiver Drew Carter, but suspect he'll be looking for the Oakland version of the event this year since he signed with the Raiders. I'll emcee the post awards again with former Buckeyes quarterback Greg Frey the featured speaker.
And finally, nice job by Roger Clemens to apologize to his family and fans. He wouldn't say what he was apologizing for, merely what he was not apologizing for (Mindy McCready, alleged HGH use). He then said he wanted to deal with these matters privately, yet he's the one who brought it up again with his written statement to The Houston Chronicle. The more Roger talks, the less sense he makes
Hi Jim. I watched the Pro-Am on Wednesday and after walking the entire course, I settled at the 17th to watch the pros try to par that demon hole. Many had a bogey and were grateful for it. Like you, I feel better about my game already. Yes, I can play my age, 67. But, only on the front nine. The back nine gets a bit more dicey! 8)
